2020-21 AMADOR YOUTH BASKETBALL SEASON UPDATE

Dear Amador Youth Basketball Families,

I hope this message finds you and your families all safe and healthy.

It is that time of year when we would normally have open registration for the 2020-21 AYB season, be recruiting coaches, setting up practice/game dates, and eagerly preparing for the start of the season.  However, this year has been anything but normal.

Despite COVID-19 wreaking havoc on just about every aspect of our lives and society, AYB’s intention was to have a season this year.  We feel passionate about how basketball allows both boys and girls to be active, learn sportsmanship, and develop a love of the game of basketball.  However, our top concern is the health and safety of every person involved, including, players, coaches, referees, and extended families.

Basketball unlike some other sports has some unique challenges to it.  It is a high contact, close proximity sport, and thus considered high COVID risk.  We also play most of our season during the winter which requires indoor gyms which is another high-risk factor.

In order to have a successful season this year we needed to pass some basic criteria.

We need the Amador County Health Officials to clear basketball practices and games as a safe activity.  We rely exclusively on public school gyms to hold our practices and games, thus we need those facilities to be open to the public.

AYB planned to have a shortened season that would begin games at the beginning February of 2021 and end around the same time as normal, late February early March.  There were a lot of details that still needed to get worked out, like where we would play, do we play games until early evenings with less gym space, play games on Sunday's, wait until the spring to have a season, and we considered all possibilities.  What we wanted to avoid is the situation where we open registration only to have to shut the season down.

AYB feels it would be in the best interest of the players and families to take this season of basketball off.
Please stay safe and healthy and I hope to see you all on a basketball court in the near future.

Thanks for your support,
Joshua Woodson
